For large-scale utility applications, solar batteries are deployed in massive containerized systems to perform functions that are critical for grid modernization and reliability. These Utility-Scale Battery Energy Storage Systems are strategically connected to the transmission or distribution network. Their primary applications include frequency regulation, where they inject or absorb power in sub-second responses to maintain the grid's stable 50/60 Hz frequency. They also provide spinning reserve, standing ready to instantly supply power in the event of a generator failure, and black start capability, helping to restart power plants after a complete blackout. Furthermore, they can be used for renewable energy firming, storing excess solar or wind energy and releasing it smoothly to mitigate the variability of these resources, thus enabling higher penetration of renewables.
